side look

I have continued to paint works that have been posted on r/artcontroldrawsyou, tonal grayscal and color layers were created.

This is the theme on EOW: Temple of A Hundred Relic. Followed by two paintings – one of a mother and child (line, bw, and color) and woman looking sideways (line, bw).

Enjoy –

Promarker New Years

For New Years my flatmate asked me to go to town with him. I took my drawing gear – sketchbook, hb pencil and the new promarkers I got. I ended up working on several works during the night.

The was a portrait that a old guy asked me to draw of his friend to see how fast I was. I was fast and he was impressed. He liked how the colors on the page changed so quickly. I guess that is why the promarkers are so awesome, they are quick to get color down. I am certainly very happy with these colors but need a light blue.

DSC_3213This was an old drawing I did of someone on RedditGetsDrawn for the GameBoy Jam many months ago. I ended up working on the color last night – certainly makes great skin tones.

DSC_3218I took with me to town my Fallout 3 concept art book I have for reference. The theme for EOW is Atomic Bomb Testing Town. It seemed very appropriate to work from Fallout reference for the concept art. Enjoying the suburb creation.

Have a great year.

EOW: Frozen Pass Pencil Drawings

Here’s the drawings I did in my book for the EOW: Frozen Pass. My Brother saw these drawings in my book and said they were good so I have made an effect to upload them .

Continued with the idea from the digital paintings with a giant statue at the edge of a path and a group of people traveling along the edge. High above the ground the ice is cracking.

I’d like to take some of these ideas into 3d, work on a small open world area in Unity3d. DSC_3159

EOW: Birth of a God development

I’ve been following the Environment of the Week for years over on Conceptart.org, but rarely brave enough to enter. This morning though I warmed up with that birthday card for Erik then afterwards got straight into creating a concept art painting for the EOW. The reference I used for it was of the Auckland waterfront, but I used the reference very little. These are certainly not finals – but it’s a great start.

Here goes –

The reference used:

Reference thanks to my stock images over on FreshFigure

I started this with using my first reference and creating a small thumbnail on the left. This extended and I build the scene from that. Though I started this as an exterior work it developed into Cavern of Creation. The idea was to have these figures travel on a escalation – being created. This is why there is a guzabio in the middle. I guess that character could be the queen.

Tone added. I wasn’t happy with this. Maybe it needs more darks in areas? Anyway, it’s unfinished and I moved on to the next one. I’m just treating these like thumbnails.

I used the second reference for this. I stuck with the reference but added extras to it. I especially wanted to add vegetation as I believe a new world would have plenty of beautiful vegetation  It’s common for me to draw it on the street – so why not include it in this!

I also created a large character in the water (right side). This character represents God watching over the smaller characters as they walk down the path to their new home. He could be there also to build as well – not everything can be completed in a day.

Tone helped flesh out this piece and give it a sense of direction. Overall I’m happy with the left side but have concern over the right and the lack of information. This is true for the background. The best option for this will be to treat it like a thumbnail and develop the scene further – with my own reference photos. I’ll work on this idea tomorrow, but for now here’s a color layer added –

Colors are what I’ve been using regularly. Though looking at this now I should of used more yellow – especially mixing it into the red areas. The red tends to dominant the work. I used the green for the water but it’s hard to notice – maybe needs more colors mixed in.

Oh and here’s the video:

Space Hangar and Levin street dev

Here’s a couple of images I’ve been working with. Trying to get something done for the EOW. I’m not partially happy with them. So I moved onto working with more of a straight street scene. Which I’m happy with.

I used a drawing I did in Levin as reference on my other monitor as I painted this. The brush I used is a custom brush I made myself. It has a very flat brush feel to it. Love it! I’m going to keep working on making brushes out of areas. Maybe release a brush pack?

Here I scaled down the previous painting and worked on adding more content to the painting. I feel my paintings often lack information and want to work on adding more. This is a good start

I’ll add the other paintings… but I’m not happy with them…

Digital Levin Start EOW Doodle

So no updates for over a week. I’ve been playing Diablo 3 during the the week. I finished it on normal as a Wizard and partway though Nightmare. I’m not hugely motivated to play it right now – likely a good thing as I can get more important tasks done like artwork. I enjoyed the playthough but Blizzard isn’t the same anymore.

I have a new tablet pen and a new place to stay – so it’s a fresh start. I havn’t done any digital painting since I lost my tablet pen so I was happy to get back into it.

Thought I’d give Photoshop CS5 a blast since I have it on this laptop (though recent updates to GIMP are wonderful).

One of my goals I wanted to do with digital painting this month is look though my life drawings I’ve done this past term and paint over digitally. I wanted to stick with the colors that I had been using in traditional media, experimenting with techniques and brushes. I’m happy with this work but need to practice further with the digital tablet.

No background. All from imagination.

Background added. Painted this last night.when watching Primer. I’ve seen Primer several times before but it’s that type of film that I never get sick of.

The EOW of the week over at Conceptart.org is Orbital Refinery. I want to get into these activitys now that my tablet is functioning. I visit the site often for inspiration. A google for Refinery gave me some images that I worked from but nothing I’m happy with. I havn’t go alot of plans this week so may work on this further.

More ideas for the EOW. Mostly just sketches or doodles. These arn’t really going anywhere.

Shapes! I used perspective heavily in my life drawing this last term so want to transfer this to the digital realm.

And finally, just a bunch of quick sketches. Again from imagination. This was just used as a exercise to warm up into using the tablet again.

That’s all for now. Expect to see further digital works.
